Fertility
Treatments Maybe Enhanced By Discovery Of "Fertility
Switch"
Scientists say they have observed an enzyme that effectively forms a
fertility switch and believe the finding could improve existing infertility
treatments, help understand miscarriage and even lead to new types
of contraceptives.
Their study which is reported in the Nature
Medicine this Sunday, outlines how a team at Imperial College London
found a protein known as SGK1 appears in high levels in infertile
women, while low levels are associated with miscarriage.
Jan Brosens, who led the study at Imperial
College and is now at Warwick University, said its results indicate
new fertility and miscarriage treatments could be designed around
SGK1. More

Paralyzed
Patient Moves Prosthetic Arm With Thoughts Alone
A paralyzed adult male patient used a brain computer interface to
move a prosthetic arm - all he had to do was use his thoughts and
the arm moved. Tim Hemmes touch hands with his girlfriend in an
emotional high-five moment. Hemmes, 30, had a motorbike accident
seven years ago which damaged his spinal cord, leaving him
paralyzed.
The researchers say that Hemmes is the
first patient in a new human study which is determining whether a
paralyzed person's thoughts can be used to control an external
device, such as a sophisticated prosthetic arm or a computer
cursor. A series of electrodes were placed on the surface of
the patient's brain, so that he could control the external arm
device. More |

Cosmetic
Surgery To Have VAT Added On In UK
After new VAT guidelines were introduced the cost of cosmetic
surgery will rise by 20% in the United Kingdom. Surgeons who carry
out plastic surgery purely for cosmetic reasons will need to
register for VAT (Value Added Tax) and add that amount onto the
patient's bill.
VAT is similar to the US Sales Tax. Those in the
cosmetics industry, who are calling this "The boob tax",
say this move should mean an additional £500 million ($780 million)
in government revenue. The UK government, like many others in
Europe, is forever seeking out ways of reducing its deficit. More |

Map 115-Year-Old Woman's Genome To Study Longevity
Dutch researchers have sequenced the genome of a woman who lived 115
years. Presenting their findings at a conference in Canada last
week, they said they hope the information will provide a useful
reference point for studies of longevity and health in old age.
Dr Henne Holstege of the Department of
Clinical Genetics at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam,
and colleagues, did not reveal the woman's name, they refer to her
as W115. At the time of her death she was the oldest known person in
the world, and throughout her life showed no signs of vascular
disease or dementia. |
